Florencio Abril Talavera, 76
Florencio Talavera, also known as ‘Flor’, Dad, Pops, and PopPop, our beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, peacefully ascended into Heaven on March 30, 2018 at the age of 76 after a long, courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer.
Born 1941 in the province of San Pablo City, Laguna, Flor was the son of Marcelino and Francisca Talavera. Flor grew up during a challenging time under difficult circumstances, full of struggle and fight for life to survive. After completing high school at age 15, Flor left the province and traveled alone 100 miles to the city to continue his studies, where he worked during the daytime and attended school at night. Through determination, perseverance, hard work, and patience, Flor excelled, obtained a college degree, and became a confident and a self-reliant young man. He earned a BS in Accounting from Ateneo University and had a successful career in accounting and as well as real estate.
Flor married his sweetheart Rosalie Talavera in 1972. Flor and Rosalie had 3 children together, and resided in Las Pinas, Philippines before migrating to Virginia in 1985. Their mutual devotion underpinned a warm and successful family life, of which both were justifiably proud. Flor’s marriage, family, and home were always his top priority, guided by his love, faith, wisdom, and insight. Flor enriched the lives of his family and friends with his caring, giving, and teaching ways. His strength, charm, sharp intelligence, judgment, and accomplishments left their mark and his legacy will forever live in our lives and within our hearts. Flor was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, a teacher, and a role model and will be forever remembered for his love and devotion to his family.
Flor was an avid foodie who loved a good burger and tacos, enjoyed traveling, growing tomatoes, squash, and peppers in his garden, fishing with his son and grandson, bowling with friends, attending his grandchildren’s sports and school events, and was a party goer at all holiday and special family events. He was fun and witty and always lit up the room with his presence, sense of humor and kindness.
Those left to cherish Flor’s memory are his devoted wife of 43 years, Rosalie Talavera, son Frederick Talavera and his wife Tanya, daughter Ruby Higgins and her husband Darrell, daughter Rachel Johnson and her husband Mark, as well as five dear grandchildren who fondly called him PopPop: Tyler Talavera, Jazmine Higgins, Christian Higgins, Mia Johnson, and Corbin Johnson. Flor is also survived by his two beloved sisters, Minda Resplandor and Teresita Talavera of San Pablo, Philippines, many nieces and nephews, and countless family and friends who will continue to allow his light shine through them. He is predeceased by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.
The family will receive friends at the Miller Funeral Home, 3200 Golansky Blvd. Woodbridge, Va 22192 on Thursday, April 5, 2018 from 5:00pm until 9:00pm. A memorial service will be held on Friday April 6, 2018 at 12:00 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 12975 Purcell Road, Manassas, Virginia 20112. Interment will follow at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Rd. Fairfax Va. 22032. Celebration of Flor’s life will be held following the interment at the family’s house.
