Margaret K. Peterson, 85

Margaret Kathryn
“Maggie”
Peterson, 85, wife of the late Eugene ”Gene” Peterson of Fredericksburg, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2018, at Mary Washington Hospital

Born September 21, 1932, in New York, she was the daughter of the late Margaret and Joseph Zepko. In addition to her beloved Gene, she was preceded in death by her brother Patrick Zepko, sister Mary Gregorek, and husbands James L Crane and Gilbert Brooks.

Maggie was a dedicated mother, homemaker and sought-after professional seamstress. In her hometown of Ballston Spa, NY, she was “Queen Maggie”, having served as the village’s Sesquicentennial Queen. Maggie believed her experience as queen prepared her to meet many of the challenges she overcame later in life. In the late 1960’s she worked at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory in West Milton, NY, and enjoyed many years at Matthew Bender. After moving to Virginia in late 1980’s, Maggie found her passion as a Sales Associate and Settlement Representative for upscale custom home builders in Lake Ridge, Manassas, Winchester and Fredericksburg. Maggie enjoyed attending the Republican Women's Federal Forum, Capitol Hill Chapter, in Washington D.C.  As the widow of Eugene Peterson, who retired as Chief of Soviet Counter Intelligence in 1979, Maggie was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Quantico Chapter. After retirement, Maggie enjoyed international travel; she loved the island of Aruba but her favorite was a trip to Israel. She had a sincere smile, a pleasing voice and was always poised. Maggie made friends everywhere she went and always showed a genuine interest in the people she met.

She is survived by sisters Agnes Pompa and Ann Groski of Ballston Spa, NY, brothers James Zepko of Sumter, SC, and Joseph Zepko of Atlanta, GA; daughters Patty Blackwelder of Mt. Vernon, VA, Peggy James of Dumfries VA, Mary Clark of Woodbridge, VA, and son James Crane of Galway, NY; six granddaughters, Tara Graul of Lyndhurst, NJ, Kathryn Graul of Granby, CO, Page Howard of Gainesville, VA, Erin Jordan of Bristol, VA, Stacy Livingston of Ballston Spa NY, and Jennifer Fenton of Carolina Beach, NC; and five great-grandchildren with one on the way, Colin Shea of Lyndhurst, NJ, Jack and Ben Livingston of Ballston Spa, NY, Vander and Gunny Fenton of Carolina Beach, NC.
